„Selma Spahić’s original project Purple explores our conservatism and narrow-mindedness we keep hidden behind our best intentions, a lot of concern and even more love. The performance text is the result of actors’ improvisations with which they were exploring the boundaries between understanding and implication, concern and oppression, honesty and cruelty, love and selfishness, tradition and primitivism… The story line of the play follows a gathering of a city family in which everyone seems to know what’s best for their loved ones; they are all painfully honest with one another, they advise and help one another even if no one ever asks for it – anything to keep them all happy. Their happiness is blurred by the appearance of purple and with it the disturbing question of freedom. What is the boundary of other people’s freedom which we are willing to cross as individuals? What boundaries has our patriarchal society already crossed? Are we accepting of other people’s happiness only if it meets our criteria? What are the places where our hypocrisy hides? Are we closer to being an ordered society or a tribal community? Throughout the process, we were exploring the boundaries within both content and form. The result is a story of a woman we think we know; the story of the thin line between her freedom and our fascism.“ – Emina Omerović
