Why are You Sleeping on the Floor is a play based on the eponymous novel by Darko Cvijetić. However, unlike the novel, this play focuses on the Author – Darko who, alongside the other cast members, recreates the world of his novel on stage, based on the war-time memories of his family. The main protagonist of those memories is Darko’s younger brother Bota, a soldier of the Yugoslav National Army at a tender age of eighteen, who ends up being captured at the Viktor Bubanj military barracks in Sarajevo. Whilst Captain Topić is trying to save those young men from the barracks, Bota’s and Darko’s parents are waiting for their son to turn up in Prijedor, where their mother Karmela, a Croat, is facing potential imprisonment and deportation to a concentration camp. Bota’s best friend Anđelo, impatient for Bota to return home, signs up with the military police himself. Senka, a young woman from Sarajevo and Bota’s love, will be waiting for him even when the shooting starts, every day, risking her life for a single moment of freedom. These and many other characters take turns in a mosaic which is so characteristic of the nature of memory, while the events are changed and shaped by the author. Generally speaking, these pieces of the mosaic create an image of merciless war suffering which should never have happened and which must not ever happen again.
